My background is in industrial production with a specialty is assembly operations. We used to work on big stuff like engines, gear assemblies, and the like. Everything was made of cast iron, steel, or aluminum. I don’t think we had a single part that was smaller than a pencil. This stuff looked like it came off of a steam locomotive from a hundred (or more!) years ago. Today, everything is different. I heard a story about a consumer device manufacturer who would dunk their prototypes in a fish tank. If any air bubbles escaped from the prototype it would be rejected. Air meant wasted space, and a redesign would be necessary. Those are the kinds of projects I am seeing today: everything is tiny, miniature, and designed to fit in the consumer’s pocket. We had to redesign our entire floor to include small conveyor assemblies just to accommodate the new parts. The products are cool, but I kind of miss the old days.
